Dental Cleanings

What can I expect during my dental cleaning?

Routine cleanings are the best way for both adults and children to prevent serious dental issues and maintain good oral health. During a routine exam, your hygienist polishes your teeth and removes plaque from along your gum line. The team may also take X-rays.

At Easy Dental Care, you can expect the following during a routine dental cleaning:

  • A visual exam of your mouth, tongue, and tonsils to identify any areas of concern
  • Removal of plaque and tartar using a scaler along your gums
  • Teeth polishing with a high-powered electric dental instrument
  • Flossing between your teeth
  • Optional application of fluoride treatments or sealants to protect teeth between dental cleanings

The team at Easy Dental Care also offers heated massage chairs and a variety of entertainment options during your treatment.

What is the purpose of fluoride treatments?

You may think that since you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, you don’t need a fluoride treatment. However, a topical fluoride treatment immediately following your dental cleaning can greatly benefit your teeth. High-strength fluoride solutions that coat your teeth provide beneficial nutrients and remineralize your enamel.

Fluoride treatments strengthen teeth and prevent cavities between cleanings. The fluoride fights bacteria that can harm teeth and gums and is especially useful for children who may not yet excel at their brushing technique.

How do sealants work?

A dental sealant is a thin coating of white filling material that your dentist uses to fill in the tiny pits and grooves in your back teeth and molars. The sealant adheres to the chewing surface of your teeth and helps prevent cavities from forming within these pits and grooves, which are highly susceptible to tooth decay.

Sealants are beneficial for both adults and children. The Centers for Disease Control reports that school-age children who don’t get dental sealants to protect their teeth have almost three times as many cavities as children who do have sealants on their back teeth.
